BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Yani Rosenberg (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) struck out 10 batters and allowed just two hits in seven innings to lead the Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 5-0 win over Western Maryland College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams this afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 13-4 overall and are 7-2 all-time in Centennial openers. Western Maryland fell to 8-4 with the loss.

Rosenberg, now 2-0 on the season with a 0.00 earned run average, retired the first nine batters of the game to set the tone for the day. After two Green Terror hits, Rosenberg shut down the final 10 batters he faced, including six strikeouts. He struck out 10 batters for first time this season and the ninth time in his career. Rosenberg, 21-3 for his career, moved into a tie for second place at JHU with 212 career strikeouts and needs 30 to become JHU's all-time leader.

After being held hitless in the first four innings, Hopkins got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior Mike DePalma (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) singled and scored three batters later on a single by senior John Krivonak (Canfield, OH/Canfield). The Blue Jays added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. DePalma drove in junior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) with a single and sophomore Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) followed with an RBI single before he scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) singled in junior Jay Cieri (Pine Brooke, NJ/Montville) in the bottom of the seventh for the final 5-0 margin. The Blue Jays were held under their averages of 10.75 runs and 12.56 hits but had timely hitting and scored all five runs with two outs.

Sophomores Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) and Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Righter walked two and struck out one, while Stafford struck out the side in the ninth. Dave Roberts suffered the loss for WMC as he allowed four runs on five hits in 5.2 innings.

The Blue Jays face the Green Terror again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in Westminster.
