Hopkins Defeats Elizabethtown, 15-6, for Fifth Straight Win
March 24, 2002
BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Jason Setty (Mt. Pleasant, TX/Mt. Pleasant) allowed just two unearned runs in 7.1 of relief work for his team-leading fourth win of the year and junior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) added a grand slam as Johns Hopkins routed Elizabethtown 15-6, today in non-conference baseball action. The Blue Jays improved to 12-3 with their fifth consecutive win, while Elizabethtown fell to 3-12 on the season.
Elizabethtown jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings before JHU responded with four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-4 advantage. Hopkins added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Cieri sealed the win with his first career home run in the top of the eighth. The home run was the 21st of the season for JHU through just 15 games. The Blue Jays hit 31 home runs in 47 games last year.
Elizabethtown managed just four hits against Setty, who improved to 16-2 for his career. His .888 career winning percentage is second only to Scott Orlovsky (29-3 .906) in school history. Setty has also recorded four victories in each of his four seasons at Hopkins.
In addition to Cieri, the JHU offense was led by Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph), who went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs, and Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston), who was 2-for-6 with a double and three runs batted in. Senior John Krivonak (Canfield, OH/Canfield) and sophomore Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) continued to swing the bats well with three runs and two RBIs, respectively.
The Blue Jays return to action Monday as JHU hosts St. Mary's College at 3:00 p.m.
