Hopkins Sweeps Doubleheader from No. 26 Ithaca

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team improved to 4-0 against ranked teams this season by sweeping a doubleheader against No. 26 Ithaca Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. The Blue Jays won the first game 5-1, and took the nightcap, 8-4, to improve to 11-2 on the year.
Ithaca fell to 5-5 on the year, including an 0-4 mark against ranked teams. Hopkins also defeated No. 5 Wooster (15-12) and No. 19 Lakeland (9-0) during the team's trip to Ft. Myers, Florida.
In the opener, Hopkins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as junior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) hit a solo home run to right field, his first of the season. Ithaca answered in the top of the third as Mike Pritts tied the game with a solo home run of his own over the fence in right.
JHU broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with four runs to set the final margin at 5-1. Ippolito started the inning with a double down the line in left field and scored as senior Joe Urban (Nanticoke, PA/Bishop Hoban) followed with a double to left. Urban then scored as junior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) drilled a double to right field.
Two batters later, Hitchner scored as sophomore Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh School) singled to center field. Sophomore Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) capped the scoring as he drove in senior Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) with an infield single to shortstop.
Junior Russ Berger (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) pitched a strong five innings to improve to 2-0 on the year. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out two. Sophomore Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley) and junior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) combined for two scoreless innings of relief.
Ithaca took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as Patrick Carroll drilled a triple down the line in right field and scored on a throwing error. The Blue Jays grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Cieri and junior Bryan Eberle (Frederick, MD/Urbana).
The Bombers regained the lead in the next inning on a bases-loaded walk and a single to left field, but Hopkins answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Durgala walked to start the inning and junior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) followed with an RBI double to right center. Cetta advanced to third on a single by Urban and scored two batters later as Eberle singled to right. Urban added the final run of the inning as he raced in from third on a wild pitch.
Ithaca closed the gap to 5-4 in the top of the fifth, but the Blue Jays responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take an 8-4 lead. Urban walked to start the inning and would later score on a fielder's choice as Cieri reached first. Sophomore Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) delivered the final shot as he belted a two-run home run to right field, the first of his career.
Junior Matt Righter (Clarion, PA/Lawrenceville Prep) earned his second win of the season with 2.1 innings in relief of starter Adam Josephart (West Nyack, NY/Clarktown South). He gave up one run on four hits and struck out two. Freshman Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) and sophomore Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) both pitched a scoreless inning in relief to finish the game.
The Blue Jays return to action Tuesday as Hopkins travels to face Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference opener at 3:00 p.m.
