SCOTTSDALE, AZ - The #10 Johns Hopkins baseball team batted around in the first two innings and held off a late charge to defeat the Wisconsin-LaCrosse team by a 16-10 score on Thursday afternoon in Scottsdale, AZ. The Blue Jays (8-3) matched their longest win streak of the season as they won their fourth straight contest.

The Blue Jays wasted little time in getting on the board as senior outfielder Isaac Katz led off the bottom of the first with his first career home run. Hopkins saw three of its next four hitters reach base and led 4-0 after one inning of play. Hopkins would add four more runs to its total in the second inning to lead 8-0 after two innings of play. Highlighting the second inning offense was a two-run home run from sophomore Brendan Walsh along with RBI singles from seniors Rob Pietroforte and Todd Emr.

Wisconsin-LaCrosse started its comeback in the top of the fourth inning. Lance Poppy had a sac fly in the inning and Tyler Peterson and Storm Gram each had RBI doubles in the inning. Wisconsin-LaCrosse plated six runs in the inning to make it an 8-6 contest after four innings of play.

Hopkins added to its lead in the fifth inning as Emr had an RBI single to plate two. The Blue Jays also got a run in the inning as Fester and Emr attempted a double steal and Fester was able to get home safely. The Blue Jays led 12-7 after six innings of play.

The Blue Jays plated two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eight inning to lead 16-10 heading to the ninth inning. Senior Tony Margve had an RBI triple in the seventh and an RBI double in the eighth to help the Blue Jays increase their lead. Hopkins also got RBI hits from Pietroforte and junior Ryan Biner.
 

 

Wisconsin-LaCrosse would put three runs on the board in the eighth inning but it was not enough as Hopkins claimed the 16-10 victory.

Junior Chez Angeloni gets the win after going 3.2 innings of work and leaving the game with an 8-6 lead. Senior Ryan Kealy picked up the save after entering the game in the top of the eighth with the tying run in the on-deck circle and shutting the door to preserve the victory. The loss went to Ross Benitz who surrendered eight runs in 1.1 innings of work.

The Blue Jays banged out a season-high 23 hits in the contest and tied their season-high with eight stolen bases. Emr and Katz combined to go 8-for-9 at the dish with seven runs scored and four RBIs. Emr was 5-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs, a double and a stolen base. Katz finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Walsh, Biner and Margve all recorded three RBIs on the day. Fester did extend his hit streak to 21 games with a single in the first inning.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Friday, March 21 when they face Dakota State. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 am MST.
