Blue Jays Sweep Doubleheader From Edgewood, 2-0 and 12-4
March 20, 2004 Clearwater, FL - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team improved to 12-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Edgewood on Friday. The Blue Jays took the opener, 2-0, and won the nightcap, 12-4.
Sophomore Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) picked up the win in the first game by throwing a seven-inning complete game shutout, allowing six hits and striking out three while not walking a batter. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when Blue Jay senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) singled, advanced to second on a ground out by senior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep), and scored on a double by junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins added an insurance run in the seventh, as senior David Luongo (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) reached an error by the Edgewood shortstop and scored when senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) singled. The Blue Jays took the early lead in the second game, as senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) doubled and scored on a home run by junior Dave Montegari (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade). Hopkins then added two runs in the third, as junior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by sophomore Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton). After junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) walked to load the bases, Spiciarich and Gleason scored when senior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) reached on an error by the Eagles shortstop. The Blue Jays scored three times in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run by Gleason, and tacked on a run in the seventh. Cetta singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored JHU's eighth run of the game when Casale reached on an Edgewood error. Hopkins then put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth. Junior Brian Harris (Longwood, FL/Lake Brantley) started the rally by getting hit by a pitch, and after Spiciarich singled, both runners advanced on a passed ball. Harris scored when Cetta reached on an error by the Eagles shortstop, and Casale followed with a single to plate Spiciarich. After Cetta and Casale each moved up on a wild pitch, senior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) stroked a two-run single to cap the scoring. Hopkins sophomore Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) recorded his second win of the year, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out three in seven innings of work. Spiciarich went 4-for-5 with four singles, while Gleason was 2-for-4 with a double and homer. The Blue Jays conclude their Florida trip Saturday when Hopkins faces Wheaton (MA) at 9:30 a.m. -30- |
