Hopkins Baseball Edges Colby-Sawyer, 4-3
March 18, 2004 Clearwater, FL - Johns Hopkins junior Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) doubled home senior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) in the eighth inning for the game-winning run as the sixth-ranked Blue Jay baseball team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 4-3, Wednesday night.
With the game knotted at 3-3 in the top of the eighth, Ippolito doubled, moved to third when senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) flied out to rightfield, and scored on Long's double. Senior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) made the lead stand up, as he allowed just one hit and struck out four in two scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Hopkins struck first in the top of the second, as Cetta tripled and scored when Long reached on an error by the Colby-Sawyer shortstop. In the third, senior Bryan Eberle (Frederick, MD/Urbana) led off with a walk and moved to third when junior Brian Harris (Longwood, FL/Lake Brantley) singled. Junior Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) then bounced into a fielder's choice to score Eberle, and after Nigro stole second, Ippolito singled him home to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead. JHU senior Adam Josephart (West Nyack, NY/Clarkston South) held the Chargers scoreless through the first four innings, but Colby-Sawyer scored three times in the fifth to tie the game. Josephart ended up allowing all three runs on three hits and five walks while striking out eight in 4.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Jason Thayer (Finksburg, MD/Westminster) relieved Josephart, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout. Junior Ryan McConnell (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) then struck out one while pitching a scoreless seventh, and picked up his second win of the season when the Blue Jays scored in the eighth. Ippolito finished 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and a run batted in, while Cetta was 2-for-4 with a triple and a single and junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) went 2-4 for a single and a double. Hopkins, now 8-0 on the season, faces Nichols at 3 p.m. and Defiance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. -30- |
