Box Score

Fort Myers, FL - Sophomore catcher Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and two runs scored as the Johns Hopkins baseball team cruised to a 16-1 seven-inning victory Sunday night over Suffolk University. The Blue Jays are now 6-2 this season and 2-0 on their current Florida trip.

Senior righthander Neal Lynch (Penington, NJ/Notre Dame) allowed just one run in seven innings to pick up his first win of the season and improve to 1-0. Lynch gave up a run on four hits in the opening frame but settled down to allow just one hit and face one batter over the minimum during the final six innings.

Senior second baseman Karl Sineath (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning, and senior first baseman Ben Taylor (Pawling, NY/Trinity-Pawling) followed three batters later with a three-run homer of his own to put Hopkins up 4-1 after one.

After the Blue Jays added a run in the second inning when sophomore shortstop Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) doubled home Hitchner, JHU put the game away with four runs in the third. The Blue Jays sent nine men to the plate in the inning, as Hitchner drove home two runs with a single and junior left fielder Jay Cieri (Pine Brook, NJ/Montville) singled home two more runs just two batters later.

The Blue Jays tacked on three runs in the fourth inning, thanks to an RBI single by senior third baseman John Krivonak (Canfield, OH/Canfield) and a two-run double by Hitchner. After a run in the fifth, sophomore right fielder Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap the scoring for the Blue Jays.

Hopkins dominated Suffolk offensively, pounding out 16 hits and three home runs while scoring in each inning. Sophomore right fielder Craig Cetta (Randolph,NJ/ Randolph) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Ippolito finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Starting pitcher Billy Waters took the loss for Suffolk, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in two-and-a-third innings.

Hopkins returns to action Monday as the Blue Jays take on Amherst College at 12 noon in Fort Myers.
