Blue Jays Win Slugfest With Westfield State, 11-7
March 17, 2004 Clearwater, FL - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team improved to 7-0 on the season with an 11-7 win over Westfield State Wednesday afternoon at Jack Russell Stadium.
The seven-inning game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when the Blue Jays exploded for five runs. Sophomore Corey Gleason (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) ignited the rally with a single and advanced to third on a single by senior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy). After senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) singled to score Gleason, both Hitchner and Casale advanced a base on a wild pitch. Senior Rob Morrison (Malibu, CA/Loyola) then walked to load the bases, and junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) doubled down the left field line to plate all three runners. Winterling stole third and scored on a groundout by senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) to cap the scoring in the frame.
The Owls got a run back in the top of the fourth, but Hopkins blew the game open by scoring six in the bottom of the inning. Gleason again led off with a single, but was erased when Hitchner grounded into a fielder's choice. Hitchner then advanced to third on a double by Casale and scored when Morrison singled. After Casale scored and Morrison advanced to second on a wild pitch, Morrison came home when junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) reached on an error by the Westfield State shortstop. Cetta followed with a single to plate Durgala, and junior Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) capped the rally with a two-run home run to right center. The Owls scored one run in the fifth and five in the seventh to account for the final score. Junior Jason Hochfelder (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley) allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out four in five innings pitched to pick up the win, while freshman Ben Raymond (Wilmington, DE/Charter School) recorded a save by pitching the final two innings. Long finished 2-for-3 with a home run, single, stolen base and two runs batted in, while Morrison was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, stolen base and RBI. Gleason went 2-for-3 with two singles, while Casale finished 2-for-4 with a single, double and run batted in. The Blue Jays face Colby-Sawyer tonight at 6:30 p.m. -30- |
