Box Score

Clearwater, FL - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team opened its Florida trip with a 7-4 win over Suffolk Saturday afternoon.

Senior Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) allowed just three hits and struck out 12 in seven scoreless innings to pick up the win and improve to 2-0 on the season. Senior Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) struck out two in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when senior Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by junior Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead. The following inning junior Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by senior Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) and scored on a balk to make it a 2-0 game.

Hopkins put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh inning. Junior Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) led off the frame with a home run and junior Mike Durgala (Annandale, VA/Thomas Jefferson) followed by getting hit by a pitch, the third time he had been hit in the game. Senior Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) then singled and senior Carl Ippolito (Ewing, NJ/Pennington School) walked to load the bases.

Long reached on an infield single to plate Durgala, and an out later senior Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) knocked in two runs with a single. Long capped the rally by scoring on a wild pitch.

Suffolk, which was playing its season-opener, scored four times in the eighth but could get no closer as the Rams fell to 0-1 on the year.

The Blue Jays, who improved to 4-0 on the season, face Ripon Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
