Box Score

Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins senior rightfielder Brian Morley (Tappan, NY/Don Bosco Prep) and junior third baseman Paul Long (Oklahoma City, OK/Heritage Hall) each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored as the sixth-ranked Blue Jay baseball team opened its 2004 season with a 7-4 win over Messiah Friday afternoon.

Senior righthander Jeremy Brown (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) allowed one run on one hit in the opening three innings to pick up the win for the Blue Jays, who won their seventh straight season-opener. The Falcons fell to 0-3 on the year.

Hopkins struck first in the bottom of the second, as with two outs Long bunted for a single and scored on a double into the right field corner by Morley. After a walk to senior catcher Doug Hitchner (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy), senior shortstop Tim Casale (West Hempstead, NY/Chaminade) singled to right to plate Morley.

Messiah got a run back in the top of the third when Chris Heisey was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Ryan Garner. However, Hopkins responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Long walked to open the frame and scored on a double by Morley. After Hitchner flied out, Casale and junior second baseman Mike Spiciarich (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) each walked to load the bases and knock Brobst out of the game.

JHU junior centerfielder Paul Winterling (Glenelg, MD/McDonogh) hit a sacrifice fly to score Morley, and after Casale advanced to third on a passed ball, Spiciarich and Casale executed a double steal to give Hopkins the four-run lead.

Junior designated hitter Eric Nigro (Randolph, NJ/Taft Prep) led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, and advanced to third on a single by junior leftfielder Craig Cetta (Randolph, NJ/Randolph). Long followed with a single to plate Nigro, and after a double play, Hitchner singled to score Cetta and make it a 7-1 game.

The Falcons responded in the sixth, as Keren Morgan doubled to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a ground out by Tyler Hallenbach. Garner opened the eighth inning with a single and scored on an error by Spiciarich, and Messiah pulled within three when Hollenbach singled home Peter Godino. However, JHU sophomore lefthander Andrew Bail (Chicago, IL/Latin School) retired the next two batters to escape without further damage.

In the ninth Heisey doubled and Joshua Clabaugh walked with two outs, but Hopkins senior righthander Sven Stafford (Evanston, IL/Evanston) got Morgan to ground out to second to end the game.

The Blue Jays return to action Sunday when they host SUNY New Paltz in a doubleheader beginning at 12 noon. The first game will last nine innings, with the nightcap seven.
