Jack Newell is entering his 14th season as an assistant coach with the Johns Hopkins baseball team. Newell came to Homewood in the fall of 1994 and has helped JHU to the NCAA Tournament seven times. Since his arrival at Hopkins, the Blue Jays have compiled a record of 409-133-3 (.753).
Newell will work primarily with the Blue Jay pitching staff this year, welcoming back his entire staff from last year in addition to several players who didn't see any time last year due to injury. In addition to his role on the baseball team, Newell serves as the assistant director of the Hopkins Summer Sports Day Camp.
Newell arrived at Hopkins after five years as the head coach at Franklin & Marshall, where he guided the Diplomats to a record of 70-55. He led F&M to a share of two MAC Southwest titles and his 1992 team earned a bid to the ECAC Tournament.
Newell began his collegiate coaching career at Millersville (Pa.), where he served as the pitching coach in 1988 and 1989. In 1989, the Marauder pitching staff led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in team ERA.
Prior to working at Millersville, Newell was a highly-successful coach at the high school level in Lancaster County, Pa. He guided Manheim Township to a record of 110-40 during his tenure, while the team also won six divisional and three overall league championships.
Newell is in his 12th year as an adjunct lecturer of history at Essex Community College. He is the father of three: Allison of Owings Mills, and Amy Daveler and Kim Knier of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
