BALTIMORE, MD - Blue Jays Unlimited (BJU) recently hosted its first Hopkins Athletics Giving Week. The five-day, 200-gift challenge ran from April 17-21 and culminated in the 2017 Johns Hopkins Alumni Weekend. BJU more than doubled its goal with 422 gifts which raised $77,740 for its sport-specific annual funds.
“The success of our first-ever Athletics Giving Week is a testament to the engagement and investment of the broader Hopkins Athletics community,” said Alanna Shanahan, Director of Athletics and Recreation. “Over 400 alumni, parents, staff, student-athletes and friends made gifts to Hopkins Athletics over the course of five days, elevating our ability to provide a first-class student-athlete experience.”
Throughout the Giving Week, student-athletes and alumni were encouraged to send emails and text messages to their former teammates and ask them to support their program.
“The most exciting part of the fundraiser was not on day one, when we got a surprising response, but on the second, third and fourth days,” said Adam Richard, Associate Athletic Director of Business Operations. “The alumni started reaching out to their teammates, and then those who had played before or after them, and they connected in ways we couldn’t have anticipated. It was great to see the level of participation, but most importantly it was inspiring to see how the alumni were drawing those who may have fallen out of touch, back to the program.”
BJU was the first development team at Johns Hopkins to utilize GiveCampus, a social fundraising and engagement platform. For the first time, alums were able to share BJU’s GiveCampus giving site through social media and encourage others to give.
“A huge thanks to the Johns Hopkins University Office of Annual Giving for its support and helping bring GiveCampus to Hopkins,” said Grant Kelly, Director of Development. “We look forward to utilizing this platform for years to come in our outreach efforts. Once again our alumni, parents, and friends did not let us down. Blue Jays Unlimited is continuing to thrive thanks to our loyal donors.”
