The Team: The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins water polo team went 5-0 on the week to improve its record to 7-9 overall. The Blue Jays defeated GWU, 11-7, and went 4-0 at the Division III Tournament hosted by JHU. At the Tournament, Hopkins dominated Grove City 17-6 and No.10 Washington & Jefferson, 15-3. On Sunday, JHU beat Penn State Behrend, 16-1, but needed overtime to hand Villanova an 18-17 loss in an exhibition contest. The Blue Jays take on #17 Princeton of Division I, and travel to Navy to face the Midshipmen and Bucknell.

Sept. 27 at George Washington: Johns Hopkins sophomore Ryan Ford (Almaden, CA/Leland) notched a game-high seven goals to lead JHU water polo to an 11-7 victory over George Washington. It was the second win for the Blue Jays over GWU in the span of a week.

The Colonials took an early 1-0 lead in the first period, but JHU responded with four unanswered goals, and never trailed for the rest of the contest. Hopkins senior Mark McCoy (Danville, CA/San Ramon) tallied two goals, while senior All-American Zaman Mirzadeh (Davis, CA/Davis) and freshman Geoffrey McCann (Menlo Park, CA/St. Francis) each registered one goal.

Sept. 30 vs. Grove City: Ten different Hopkins players, led by Ryan Ford and Geoffrey McCann who each recorded three goals, scored against Grove City as the Blue Jays defeated the Wolverines 17-6.

Senior Zaman Mirzadeh, senior Mark McCoy, and freshman Matt Shindel (Whittier, CA/Sonona) all tallied two goals. Paul Ramaley (So., Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), sophomore Fred Kingston (Ijamsville, MD/Urbana), Adam Drucker (Fr., Lafayette, CA/Campolindo), freshman Parker Emmott (Hillsborough, CA/Menlo), and Sajad Moradi (Fr., Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College) each posted one goal.

Junior goalkeeper Mark McGory (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos) made 10 saves, while goalie Craig Smith (Fr., San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) notched nine deflection. The Blue Jays led from start to finish and even shut out the Wolverines, 5-0, in the second period.

Sept. 30 vs. Washington & Jefferson: JHU’s defense was in the spotlight against Washington & Jefferson, blanking the Division III 10th-ranked Presidents’ in the first and second quarters, and taking a 15-3 win.

Ryan Ford, Zaman Mirzadeh, Fred Kingston, Geoffrey McCann, Matt Shindel, freshman Jared Bluntzer (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) all scored for Hopkins. Craig Smith and Mark McGory each registered 10 saves in the contest.

Oct. 1 vs. Penn State Behrend: JHU built an 11-0 lead against Penn State Behrend at halftime, and cruised to a 16-1 victory.

Tim Slack led Hopkins with three goals. Senior Zaman Mirzadeh, sophomore Ryan Ford, and freshmen Sajad Moradi and Matt Shindel each tallied two goals. Sophomore Paul Ramaley, senior Mark McCoy and freshmen Parker Emmott, Geoffrey McCann, and Adam Drucker each recorded one goal.

Hopkins junior goalkeeper Mark McGory made three saves, while freshman Craig Smith posted five saves.

Oct. 1 vs. Villanova: Hopkins needed double-overtime to defeat Villanova, 18-17, in an exhibition match. The Wildcats led 14-11 with 5:09 remaining in the final period. JHU then scored four straight goals to take a 15-14 lead. But, VU tied the contest with 12 seconds left to force the game into overtime.

In the first OT, the Wildcats took the lead on a goal with 2:07 left on the clock. The Blue Jays’ Zaman Mirzadeh scored with 1:16 remaining to tie the match at 16-16 heading into the second overtime.

Mirzadeh opened the second OT with a goal at 2:27. VU tied the contest at 17-17, scoring with 43 seconds left on the clock. But, Mirzadeh answered again for Hopkins on a goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game. Mark McGory and Craig Smith each made two great saves in the overtime periods as the Blue Jays held on for the 18-17 win.

Mirzadeh and Ryan Ford finished with six goals. Paul Ramaley and Geoffrey McCann totaled two goals each, while Parker Emmott and Mark McCoy each picked up one goal. McGory notched six saves against the Wildcats and Smith collected nine.
