JHU WATER POLO WINS TWO MORE AT DIVISION III TOURNAMENT
BALTIMORE Johns Hopkins' water polo team nabbed two more victories on Sunday, the final day of the Division III Water Polo Tournament hosted by JHU. The Blue Jays demolished Penn State Behrend, 16-1, but had to defeat Villanova in double overtime, 18-17. The game against the Wildcats was an exhibition contest, nevertheless, Hopkins still had a spectacular weekend, and improved its overall mark to 7-9.
JHU built an 11-0 lead against Penn State Behrend at halftime, and cruised to a 16-1 victory. Tim Slack led Hopkins with three goals. Senior All-American Zaman Mirzadeh (Davis, CA/Davis), sophomore Ryan Ford (Almaden, CA/Leland), freshman Sajad Moradi (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall College), and freshman Matt Shindel (Whittier, CA/Sonona) each tallied two goals. Sophomore Paul Ramaley (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), senior Mark McCoy (Danville, CA/San Ramon) and freshmen Parker Emmott (Hillsborough, CA/Menlo), Geoffrey McCann (Menlo Park, CA/St. Francis), and Adam Drucker (Lafayette, CA/Campolindo) each recorded one goal.
Hopkins junior goalkeeper Mark McGory (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos) made three saves, while freshman Craig Smith (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) posted five saves.
In the exhibition match against Villanova, the Wildcats led 14-11 with 5:09 remaining in the final period. JHU then scored four straight goals to take a 15-14 lead. But, VU tied the contest with 12 seconds left to force the game into overtime.
In the first OT, the Wildcats took the lead on a goal with 2:07 left on the clock. The Blue Jays' Mirzadeh scored with 1:16 remaining to tie the match at 16-16 heading into the second overtime.
Mirzadeh opened the second OT with a goal at 2:27. VU tied the contest at 17-17, scoring with 43 seconds left on the clock. The All-American Mirzadeh answered again for Hopkins on a goal with 32 seconds remaining in the game. McGory and Smith each made two great saves in the overtime periods as the Blue Jays held on for the 18-17 win.
Mirzadeh and Ford finished with six goals. Ramaley and McCann totaled two goals each, while Emmott and McCoy each picked up one goal. McGory notched six saves against the Wildcats and Smith collected nine.
In other action from Sunday, Villanova defeated Washington & Jefferson, 16-9, and Penn State Behrend fell to Grove City, 19-6.
The Blue Jays next contest will on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at home versus Princeton.
