JHU Water Polo Suffers Three Defeats At Bucknell

JHU WATER POLO SUFFERS THREE DEFEATS AT BUCKNELL

Princeton, Bucknell, and Navy win 17-4, 14-10, and 13-9, respectively.

Lewisburg, PA — Johns Hopkins' water polo team suffered three defeats at Bucknell University over the weekend. The Blue Jays fell to Princeton, 17-4, and Bucknell, 14-10, on Saturday. On Sunday, Navy handed JHU a 13-9 loss. Hopkins, ranked fourth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III poll, sees its record go to 3-9 overall, and 1-3 in the CWPA Southern Division.

Division I #16 Princeton opened the first quarter with a 3-0 lead, and poured in four more in the second to take a 7-2 advantage. The Tigers turned it up in the second half boasting a 10-1 marker margin for the final 17-4 defeat. Goalkeeper Craig Smith (Fr., San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) notched 14 saves.

Against Bucknell, the Blue Jays took an early 2-0 lead, but the Bison fought back to make it 4-3 at the end of the first period. BU outscored Hopkins 4-2 in the second stanza to claim a 7-6 halftime lead. In the second half, Bucknell tallied seven more goals compared to JHU's four to stake the 14-10 victory. Smith made eight saves in the contest.

Sunday's match pitted the Division I No. 15 Midshipmen against the Blue Jays, with Navy topping Johns Hopkins, 13-9. The Mids recorded five goals in both the first and third periods en route to the 13-9 win. Smith blocked nine shots.

Scoring leaders over the weekend for JHU were All-American Zaman Mirzadeh (Sr., Davis, CA/Davis), who registered 10 goals, and Geoffrey McCann (Fr., Menlo Park, CA/St. Francis) who netted six scores. Mark McCoy (Sr., Danville, CA/San Ramon) picked up four markers.

The Blue Jays next contest will be at George Washington on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. JHU defeated GW on Friday by a 13-9 margin.
