HOPKINS WATER POLO OPENS LEAGUE PLAY
WITH 13-9 VICTORY OVER GEORGE WASHINGTON
BALTIMORE — Hopkins senior All-American Zaman Mirzadeh (Davis, CA/Davis) led all scorers with six goals as JHU's water polo team defeated George Washington, 13-9, on Friday evening at the White Aquatic Center. The Blue Jays, ranked fourth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III poll, improved their record to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the CWPA Southern Division, while the Colonials go to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in league play.
	Hopkins took an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, but George Washington got two quick scores to tie the match at 2-2. The Blue Jays responded with three more goals to finish the stanza with a 5-2 lead. JHU extended its advantage in the second period scoring two more goals versus the Colonials lone goal, to stake a 7-3 halftime lead.
	The Blue Jays broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring GW 5-1, to increase the margin to 12-4. The Colonials attempted a rally in the fourth period, taking the stanza five goals to one, but it wasn't enough as JHU went on to win, 13-9.
	JHU sophomore Ryan Ford (Almaden, CA/Leland) and freshman Geoffrey McCann (Menlo Park, CA/St. Francis) each posted two goals. Daniel Herr (Fr., Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake), Paul Ramaley (So., Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), and Mark McCoy (Sr., Danville, CA/San Ramon) each recorded one goal for the Blue Jays. A raucous crowd of 100 people attended the contest.
	Hopkins goalkeepers Craig Smith (Fr., San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) and Mark McGory (Jr., Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos) both registered five saves.
JHU continues its matches against Southern Division opponents on Saturday and Sunday at Bucknell. Saturday is highlighted with contests against CWPA Division I No. 16 Princeton at 2:00 p.m. and Bucknell at 8:00 p.m. The Sunday slate has the Blue Jays facing Division I #15 Navy at 10:00 a.m.
