Calder Announces Changes in Athletic Training Staff

Aug. 11, 2004

BALTIMORE, Md. — Johns Hopkins Director of Athletic Tom Calder recently announced several changes in the athletic training staff at the University. Brad Mountcastle, who served nearly four years as an Assistant Athletic Trainer, has been promoted to Head Athletic Trainer, while assistant athletic trainer Matt Bussman has been promoted to Associate Athletic Trainer. In addition, Sarah Ritchie has joined the staff as an Assistant Athletic Trainer.

Mountcastle replaces Gary Horsmon, who had served as the head athletic trainer for nearly 12 years, but resigned to pursue other opportunities. Mountcastle will work primarily with the Blue Jay men’s lacrosse, men’s basketball and field hockey teams, while also having overall administrative responsibility for the department. Mountcastle has served as the interim athletic head trainer since Horsmon resigned in February.

Bussman is entering his second year on the Johns Hopkins staff after coming to Hopkins after a two-year stint at Vanderbilt University. Bussman will serve as the main athletic training contact for the Johns Hopkins football, women’s lacrosse and swimming teams.

Ritchie comes to Johns Hopkins after serving as a graduate assistant in the athletic training department at James Madison University for two years. She will work primarily with the Johns Hopkins men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball teams. A 2002 graduate of West Virginia University, Ritchie worked closely with the James Madison baseball, men’s soccer, softball and gymnastics teams and earned her master’s degree in exercise physiology at JMU.
