Hopkins Finishes 16th in 2003-04 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings

June 17, 2004

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Johns Hopkins University athletic program has earned its eighth straight top-30 finish in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup Division III standings as JHU checks in at 16th in the final 2003-04 rankings. The finish is tied for the second-best in school history as Hopkins placed a program-best 14th last year and 16th in 1996-97. In all, eight Blue Jay teams participated in NCAA Championships during the 2003-04 academic year, helping Hopkins accumulate 469.5 points. Williams (MA) claimed its eighth Directors' Cup title in the last nine years as the Ephs tallied 1,081.75 points to easily out-distance second-place Emory (811). Middlebury (779.5), The College of New Jersey (51) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point (730) round out the top five.

Johns Hopkins earned 172 points during the spring to jump from 22nd place after the winter to 16th in the final standings. The men's lacrosse team earned 83 points with its appearance in the NCAA Semifinals, while the Blue Jay baseball team advanced to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship Game to earn 64 points. The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team made its first appearance in the NCAA Championships at the Division I level and earned 25 points.

Hopkins' finish in the spring came on the heels of a strong showing in the winter that lifted the Blue Jays from 82nd after the fall to 22nd after the winter. The presence of four teams in NCAA Championship competition in the winter was the key to the overall success of the program during the 2003-04 year. The men's and women's swimming teams combined to earn 148.5 points as both teams finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships. The men's team earned 75 points with a fifth-place finish at the NCAAs, while the women placed sixth and added 73.5 points. The JHU women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and added 50 points to the total, while the fencing team placed 28th and added 46.

In the fall the Johns Hopkins field hockey team made a stunning run through the conference tournament to earn the Centennial Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays defeated Wesley (DE) in the first round before falling to The College of New Jersey in the second round. Still, the team earned 53 valuable points in the Directors' Cup - these were the only points JHU accumulated in the fall.

Johns Hopkins placed 49th in the inaugural NCAA Division III Director's Cup Standings in 1996, but moved to a then program-best 16th-place in 1997. JHU added 24th (1998), 25th (1999), 21st (2000), 30th (2001), 22nd (2002) and 14th-place (2003) showings before this year's 16th-place finish. Hopkins is the only school in the Centennial Conference that has placed in the top 30 in any year since the inception of the program in 1996.

Points in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup are accumulated by a school's finish in any of 18 championships (9 men and 9 women) sponsored by the NCAA. There were 430 eligible colleges and universities competing for the 2003-04 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup at the NCAA Division III level and 283 (65.8 percent) earned points during the year. Using this as a benchmark, Johns Hopkins ranks among the top 3.75 percent of all NCAA Division III athletic programs.
