Johns Hopkins Jumps to 26th in Directors' Cup Standings

April 10, 2008

BALTIMORE, MD - The final 2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings for the winter have been released and Johns Hopkins has jumped from 37th place at the end of the fall to 26th place. The Blue Jays have accumulated 283.50 points in the standings after adding 167.50 points in the winter to their total of 116 in the fall. Points are awarded based on a school's finish in up to 18 sports - nine men and nine women - in NCAA Championships. Washington (MO) leads the race for the cup with 693.50 points and Amherst, Williams, New Jersey and Middlebury round out the top five.

The men's swimming teams anchored JHU's efforts in the winter as the men's team earned 90 points with a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The second-place finish is the third for the Blue Jays this decade. The women's swimming team contributed 38.5 points with a 35th-place finish at the NCAAs. The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams have combined for over 100 points in the Directors' Cup in each of the last 10 years.

Hopkins grabbed an additional 39 points in wrestling as the Blue Jays qualified a pair of wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Senior Eric Fishel led the way a the NCAAs as he became the first wrestler in program history to earn All-America honors as he placed eighth in the 184-pound weight class. Patrick Stanley also qualified for the NCAAs and wrestled three matches before being eliminated.

Hopkins got the 2007-08 year off to a good start in the fall as the men's and women's soccer, field hockey and women's cross country teams combined to accumulate the 116 points.
