Johns Hopkins Fourth in Winter Directors' Cup Standings
Men's Swimming Leads Winter Effort with Fourth-Place Finish at NCAA Championships

BALTIMORE, MD – Fueled by three top-15 finishes at NCAA Championships and four teams scoring overall, Johns Hopkins accumulated 255.0 points during the winter season and ranks fourth in the final 2016-17 Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings for the winter. The winter effort builds on a 337.5-point showing in the fall to give Blue Jay teams a total of 592.5 points on the year.
Washington-St. Louis has built a commanding lead in the standings and currently ranks first with 837.0 points, while Williams (705.25), Tufts (699.0), Johns Hopkins and Middlebury (584.0) round out the top five.
Johns Hopkins has placed in the top 10 in the final Directors’ Cup standings in five of the last six years with eighth (2010-11), ninth (2011-12), seventh (2012-13), third (2013-14) and second place (2014-15) finishes to its credit. Johns Hopkins has 10 consecutive top 20 finishes and 18 top 25 finishes in the 21 years the program has existed.
The men’s swimming team led the way for Johns Hopkins in the winter as a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championships landed 80 Directors’ Cup points. The women’s swimming team added 69 points with a ninth-place finish at the NCAAs.
Head coach Bobby Van Allen’s men’s and women’s indoor track teams added a combined 106 points as the men placed 14th to earn 61.5 points, while the women added 44.5 points with a 27th-place showing.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Through the course of the year, Directors’ Cup points are awarded based on a school’s finish in up to 18 sports – nine men and nine women – in NCAA Championships.
