BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Johns Hopkins Department of Athletics announced today the launching of the Junior Jays, the official kids club of Johns Hopkins lacrosse. The club is open to boys and girls and provides an opportunity for Johns Hopkins lacrosse fans in the eighth grade and younger to be actively involved with the Blue Jay men's and women's lacrosse teams.

"Our players have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities we have had to interact with our many young fans in the community," Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala stated. "I am very excited about the launching of the Junior Jays because it is another opportunity for our players to serve as role models and mentors to young people. We certainly hope that this helps us increase the number of boys and girls who follow Hopkins lacrosse, but more importantly this provides a chance for our players to have a positive impact on the lives of the children who join," he added.

Junior Jays members will receive numerous benefits, including one general admission ticket to all Blue Jay men's lacrosse games (there is no admission fee for Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse games) and an official club t-shirt. In addition, only Junior Jays members will be given the opportunity to be a ball boy or ball girl at Hopkins lacrosse games and members will also receive a 10% discount on the registration fee to attend the Johns Hopkins boy's or girl's lacrosse youth camps this summer. A complete list of club benefits can be found on the registration form.

As a bonus, the first 150 boys and girls to register for the Junior Jays club will be entered in a drawing to win two all-session passes to the 2003 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Final Four at Ravens Stadium. Johns Hopkins is one of four schools co-hosting the 2003 and 2004 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships.

"With our program now entering its fifth season at the Division I level, we have seen a steady increase in the number of fans who attend our games," noted Janine Tucker, head coach of the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team. "Giving young people a chance to become a part of our program is something that everyone associated with the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team is looking forward to," she added.

The annual registration fee to join the Junior Jays is $25. Membership in the club will run until June 1, 2003. Beginning next year, the club will be expanded to include additional Johns Hopkins teams with memberships running from August 1 -- June 1 each year. A registration form can be downloaded off the official web site of Hopkins Athletics (www.HopkinsSports.com).
