BALTIMORE, MD - The final 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings for the fall have been released and Johns Hopkins ranks ninth in the NCAA Division III standings. The Blue Jays scored points in four sports and accumulated 204 points to earn the ninth-place showing, the highest in program history at the end of the fall. There are more than 400 schools competing under the NCAA Division III banner and 180 scored points in the Directors' Cup standings in the fall.

Johns Hopkins, which finished 16th in last year's Directors' Cup Standings and a program best 10th in 2006-07, scored points in men's and women's soccer, women's cross country and field hockey in the fall.

Anchoring the program's efforts in the fall were the men's and women's soccer teams, which both advanced to the Sweet 16 and earned 64 Directors' Cup points apiece. The Blue Jay women's cross country team completed the most successful season in school history with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championships to earn 51 points and the field hockey team rounded out JHU's fall NCAA Tournament participants as the Blue Jays qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and earned 25 points.

The standings do not take into account the remainder of what was the most successful fall season in the history of the Johns Hopkins athletic program. In addition to the four teams listed above, the Johns Hopkins football team posted an 8-3 record and advanced to the ECAC Southeast Bowl Game, the volleyball team finished with a 20-7 record and the water polo team finished the season as the top-ranked Division III team in the nation.

Cortland State currently ranks first in the Directors' Cup standings with 353 points, while Williams (326), Messiah (294), Emory (278) and Calvin (265) round out the top five. Through the course of the year, points are awarded based on a school's finish in up to 18 sports - nine men and nine women - in NCAA Championships.
